Today marks the one year anniversary of the Linode Library! Over the last twelve months, our documentation team has publish over three hundred guides on server administration topics, ranging from basic Linux administration to high availability server configurations, and has made the articles available to anyone who would like to use them.

Our mission remains simple: to provide accurate and easy-to-follow instructions for deploying and managing a wide range of Linux server applications. We want to thank everyone for all the positive feedback we have received, and we continue to welcome your suggestions for improvement as we strive to build the most expansive server administration library on the Web. After all, we’re here to make your life easier.

If you’d like to make a suggestion, please feel free to use the suggestion box on the Library’s home page, or email our docs team at docs@linode.com. We’re also looking for more community contributions, so if you’d like to write a guide on something that hasn’t yet been covered, we want to hear from you!

Linode had its humble beginnings on this day seven years ago with just a handful of servers, a whole lot of time invested in code, and a dream to bring the benefits of virtualization to the masses. Over the past seven years we’ve seen cloud computing and virtualization explode into an industry unto itself, and Linode has been, and continues to be, a pioneer in that industry. We had it right from the start.

Since Linode’s beginning we’ve continuously worked hard to provide the exceptional quality of service we feel our customers deserve. It’s been an honor and a privilege, and we’re incredibly proud of what Linode has become. You can bet Linode will continue to innovate, add features and services, and continue to grow as a company and a service, just as we’ve always done.

To commemorate this milestone and to show our appreciation for you, our customers, we’ve increased RAM across all our plans by about +42%. The new Linode Lineup looks like this: Linode 512, Linode 768, Linode 1024, Linode 1536, Linode 2048, Linode 4096 (4GB), Linode 8192 (8GB), Linode 12288 (12GB), Linode 16384 (16GB), Linode 20480 (20GB).

This upgrade is available immediately for existing and new customers. To take advantage of your new RAM, simply reboot once. That’s it!

Linode is happy to support three conferences being held later this month:

YAPC – The Yet Another Perl Conferences (YAPCs) are grassroots symposia on the Perl programming language promoted by The Perl Foundation, a non-profit corporation dedicated to the advancement of the Perl programming language through open discussion, collaboration, design, and code. We sponsored and attended YAPC last year and it was great to meet some Linode customers face to face. We’ll be in Columbus, Ohio this year from June 21st to June 23rd.

fosscon – The Free and Open Source Software Conference will be held at the Rochester Institute of Technology on June 19th and we’ll be in attendance.

SELF – The Southeast LinuxFest is a community event for anyone who wants to learn more about Linux and Free & Open Source software. We won’t be able to make it to Spartanburg, SC this year, but we’re still sponsoring the conference for the second year in a row.

Come hang out with us if you are attending YAPC or fosscon and maybe even score a rare Linode t-shirt.

You do have backups, right? Yeah, we thought so. Backups are a good thing, but they’re tedious to configure and monitor. We’ve all heard the stories (and possibly experienced them) about some poor soul losing valuable data because the time wasn’t invested in a working backup system — or worse, false security was placed in a backup system that was unreliable.

We’re pleased to announce the immediate availability of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx). This LTS version is slated to receive security updates until April 2015. As with all our distributions, you may deploy either the 32-bit (recommended for most uses) or 64-bit version.

If upgrading from a prior version of Ubuntu, you need to make sure you’re running the “Latest Paravirt” kernel (2.6.32.12-linode25 or 2.6.32.12-x86_64-linode12). You’ll also need to edit your /etc/fstab file and add the following line:

    dev  /dev  devtmpfs  rw  0  0

We’ve also been hard at work updating our Linode Library documentation to support Ubuntu 10.04, and will frequently release new VPS guides for this version. There’s also a Lucid upgrade article which explains the full upgrade process.

Need a way to quickly get a LAMP stack up and running that’s automatically tuned, tweaked and optimized for you? Ever wished there was a way to deploy a Wordpress stack that worked right out of the box? How about an easy way to deploy a cluster of identically configured Linodes?

StackScripts™ provide a flexible way to customize our distribution templates. They’re very easy to use — find a StackScript, answer its questions, and click deploy. When the deployment is first booted, the script is executed and does its thing. You can even watch its progress by viewing the console.

StackScripts can be private to your account, shared to the Linode community, or chosen from our library of open source StackScripts. The Linode Manager Users and Grants permission system enables you to restrict who can use or edit your private StackScripts. The Linode API can even handle StackScripts, so management can be rolled into your existing workflow.

You can browse the repository of public StackScripts.  You’ll also notice a new link off the deploy page for deploying from a StackScript, and on the main Linodes tab a link to the StackScript editor.

While we’ve had network transfer/bandwidth pooling in our internal accounting for some time, it’s never been displayed in the Linode Manager — until now.  At the bottom of the main Linodes tab, you’ll now see a new section that displays the cumulative network transfer quotas for all your Linodes for this month, how much you’ve used, and how much is remaining:

This also does the right thing when adding or removing Linodes or Network Transfer Extras mid-month, eliminating any confusion as to how the network transfer pro-rating is done.
